I have been sent lots of messages asking lots of questions about Temperature Blankets and where to start, so I thought I’d better make a blog!
The best thing about temperature blankets is it is entirely up to you what colours you choose and what pattern to do. I love playing with different colours, and as you can see from my blankets below, I have used a range of different colours to get different looks for my blankets!
I’ve also used different patterns. For my 2022 temperature blanket I crocheted a round per day of a granny square, ending up with a granny square per month and so 12 squares in total. I topped these up to 31 rounds each, by using the last colour of the month for any extra round(s). Its huge!! So I crocheted together the first six months (3×2 squares) and crocheted them to the second six months to make a thick and cosy crochet blanket which I love. I used our month buttons to remember which month was which, and then a 2022 year button to finish it off. These colours are also something I get asked about a lot! It was Deramores yarn, and sadly you just can’t get all of these colours anymore. I do currently have some yarn ordered though which I am hoping will be a similar palette to these. Fingers crossed!
Moving on to 2023, I wanted to have more time to dedicate to other projects too, so I am currently crocheting two rows per week. I’m doing the lowest and highest temperature of the week. You can use any pattern you want, and I’m using my Lydia’s Blanket available in another of my blog posts (Lydia’s Blanket – LauretteCraftsUK). I’ve gone for bright colours this year! I’ve done one week so far and I’m really loving this yarn to work with.
And going back a few years, I couldn’t resist starting a 2015 blanket as I knew which colours I wanted to use – the dune pack from Attic24! For this one, I am doing granny squares again, but a round per day, finishing at a square a week. These will then be joined together to make a runner, and I’m so pleased with how it’s coming along already. That said – I don’t think it was long after this photograph that I realised I had joined them together in the wrong order!! Thank goodness they were only crocheted together and not sewn, so it was quick to undo and rejoin…!
So after you have chosen what pattern for your temperature blanket, you need to track the temperature! Some people go with the highest each day (as I have for 2022/2015), the average, or the highest and lowest (like my current 2023 one). There are lots of sites you can use for this but I use timeanddate.com. I especially like this site as it keeps historical temperatures, so if I miss a few days or so it doesn’t matter, I can easily look it up. I just keep it open as a tab on my phone and scroll to wherever I need to!
Alongside your colours, you also need to choose your temperature ranges! We currently have Degrees Celsius temperature cards which can help with this, and have Fahrenheit ones being test cut as we speak! This will also guide how many different colours of yarn you want. Of course you can choose any ranges you want, and if you do want a shade card to go with this we can either make you a personalised engraved one, or you can buy a blank one to write your own details on.
